From Los Angeles to Cotonou, producers, directors, and other film industry professionals aim to develop Beninese cinema, hoping to make it essential across the African continent and beyond.

Benin is emerging as a potential center for African cinema, driven by the efforts of filmmaker Sado Tosu. After training in Los Angeles, Tosu returned to Benin to launch the series 'Alokan', which has provided opportunities for new actors and gained local acclaim. He also established a film school in Cotonou, training around a hundred students in acting, professionalism, and international networking. Tosu's streaming service, Sado Plus, aims to give Beninese productions global exposure and profit-sharing for actors. Rather than imitating other African film industries, Tosu emphasizes creating original content rooted in Beninese culture, with the goal of reaching audiences worldwide.

Benin dreams of becoming cinema hub

Sado Tosu, a filmmaker trained at the prestigious New York Film Academy in Los Angeles, returned to Benin in 2020 with a vision to reshape the local cinema landscape. We made a first series and it was a success. People are still talking about it. I needed that success to find the strength to create here again in Benin. His show, Alokan, about the lives of young call center agents, has become a stepping stone for new actors, among them Camille, Jacques and Lorella Volpi, who was recently discovered by a Parisian agency. It still feels like a dream or an illusion. I'm so happy. If he hadn't helped me grow and improve my acting, I wouldn't be here. Sado Tosu also founded a film school in Cotonou that has welcomed around a hundred students so far. The program focuses on acting, professionalism, career planning and international networking. For me, it's about talent. My actors aren't famous, but the show might get them there, as well as further opportunities elsewhere in the world. I really hope so. With Sado Plus, filmmaker Sado Tosu offers a streaming service that helps talent gain global exposure and share in profits. The main actors will receive a percentage of how successful the series will be. Sado Tosu refuses to imitate Nollywood. Instead, the founder hopes to create high-quality shows rooted in Benin's daily life. I prefer to focus on uniqueness. If I meet a French, American or Japanese person tomorrow, they might not necessarily be into Nollywood. I want them to be into Sado Plus. He's already helping students expand their horizons beyond Benin. One of them, Shyamaka, is now studying at the New York Film Academy in Los Angeles. Through his productions and his school, Tosu is now part of a new wave of ambitious African filmmakers, a generation determined to make an impact across the world.
