Care farms like these have been operating in Europe since the late 90s with the Netherlands leading the way. Research shows this model can help improve dementia patients' mobility, well-being and cognitive function. There's no question that people with Alzheimer's disease become very withdrawn. They become lonely. The facility has goats, chickens and a garden to give its 75 full-time residents a chance to be active outdoors. It also offers a day program for non-residents who have dementia. The girls that talk to us and look after us basically and tell us what to do. You know, they're all very nice and polite. More than 700,000 Canadians are living with dementia. By 2030, that number could reach about 1 million. Hello! There's no cure but a desire to give patients a good quality of life. Quite often we sacrifice quality of life for the sake of safety. It's why professors at the universities of Simon Fraser and McMaster are now researching the Langley farm and how it can be replicated across the country. But we want to bring in the evidence that interaction with nature is important. It costs as much as $13,000 a month to live full-time at the Langley facility.
