State Emergency Services have urged residents of New South Wales to prepare for what is predicted to be a record-breaking storm season in the state.

Authorities in New South Wales are anticipating a particularly severe storm season, with volunteers already responding to over 48,000 callouts this year. Meteorologists attribute the heightened risk to wetter than usual winter conditions, La Niña-like patterns in the Pacific, and warmer sea surface temperatures, all contributing to an increased likelihood of heavy rainfall, flash flooding, and severe thunderstorms.

Residents are being advised to prepare early by securing loose items, clearing gutters, and having an emergency plan in place. The Bureau of Meteorology has enhanced its forecasting capabilities, now able to provide more accurate and timely warnings, aiming to keep the community better informed and prepared for potential hazards.

With a wetter than usual winter, seeing rainfall totals six times monthly means the spring outlook is similar as La Niña-like patterns are being monitored in the Pacific. Warmer than usual nights forecast and we've got warmer sea surface temperatures and with all of that comes an increased chance of unusually high rainfall. Now until April, prime time for damaging conditions with a higher likelihood of flash flooding, destructive wings and severe thunderstorms. This is actually a mould from the April 1999 Sydney severe thunderstorm. It's a mould taken from an actual hailstone and it demonstrates how significant one is. Imagine thousands of them falling out of the sky. The advice, prepare early. Consider what is left laying around, don't have block gutters. We ask you to make sure that you have a plan. The bomb's now much faster, warning the community about severe weather events thanks to more accurate forecasts. It's now just as confident in its four-day predictions than it was in its two-day predictions 20 years ago, meaning alerts can be released quicker and more frequently. We're very much cognisant of the fact that there is warning fatigue and messaging fatigue within the community. When the weather's really starting to kick off, go to your hazards near me and if you're travelling through spring, think ahead and start sending notifications for those towns that you're going towards.
