Moffett's career highlights include four Bathurst 1000 victories and four championship titles. He was admired by both peers and younger drivers, and despite being affected by Alzheimer's disease later in life, his legacy as a motorsport icon remains significant.

They were the driving forces of what became one of the greatest rivalries in Australian sport and culture. An era where fans bled red or blue, and generations to follow would be divided by the choice of a Ford or Holden badge. It was a great time. I think it was the best part of the motorsport that we know of, because it was like a golden era when the drivers could do and make some modifications to the car. In the mid-seventies, Colin Bond had wrestled Tiranas on dirt to win three Australian Rally Championships. He'd conquered the mountain on Daboo in 1969. That same year, the man who'd later be crowned king there got his break with the Holden dealer team. Peter Brock and probably Moff, they were the two that sort of really took it to another level. When Cole jumped from the Red Lion to the Blue Oval and joined Alan's Ford team in an XC hardtop coupe, 1977 saw his name etched next to Moff's forever, as the number two car gave up victory under team orders for that iconic 1-2 finish. You know, the team manager came out, they'd form finish 1-2, you know, OK. I'm reminding you who's paying the bills in the morning, and we made it a 1-2. Moffett was always stern and could rub crews in the paddock the wrong way. His driving did all the talking. When we'd go to a race meeting and you'd get there days earlier than you get if they can't go round and round. Moffett came to Australia in the late 50s, his career defined by his rivalry with Holden's poster boy, Brocky. Combatants on track and old friends, years later, no longer chasing the same chequered flag. A lot of people thought that, you know, we were always like this, but that wasn't the case. Moffett was also mountain royalty and won the great race four times, the championship the same. An idol for the next generation of Ford drivers. I'm humbled to be able to have done this with you today, mate, I really am. My pleasure, mate. You are a hero to so many people, you are to me, and I appreciate you chatting to me. Good on you, it's great. Alzheimer's slowly robbed the racer of his own on-track memories, but his achievements made him a motorsport immortal. Alan Moffett was 86. Chris Campy, 10 News.
