Despite these assurances, advocates maintain that first-hand accounts from detainees contradict the official statements, and they have pledged to continue their efforts to improve conditions.

The main goal is to get them out, calling for the release of their loved ones, and more recently for better conditions inside there. They're not animals. They're human beings. Yaseline Corrales with Aurora Unidos CSO joined demonstrations on Saturday outside the state capital to protest ice actions across the country. She says the immigrant rights group has heard from people inside the Aurora Ice facility about insufficient medical care and illness outbreaks. There's people with severe mental health and physical health complications within the facility and are not receiving adequate care for those we've seen. Food withheld as a punishment. Now the Adams County Health Department confirms it's investigating the facility. County health officials would not know exactly what reports or conditions they're looking into. We reached out to ice to ask about these reports of unmanaged illnesses and lack of medical care for detainees. A DHS spokesperson said, quotes any claims about an illness outbreak being untreated are categorically false. The spokesperson said detainees receive medical and dental care and a mental health screening within 12 hours of arriving at each detention facility. DHS says detainees also get a full health assessment within 14 days of entering ice custody. Or arriving at a facility and have access to medical appointments and 24 hour emergency care. We've seen and worked with detainees who are providing first hand testimony that contradicts what ice is saying. She says she and others will continue to fight for better treatment for detainees.
