It is the deadliest train accident in the country for more than a decade. Let's speak to journalist Lily Myers, who's in Madrid with the latest. Bring us up to speed with what's been happening and this death toll that has been rising. Lily. Yes, Folly. Well, it's tragic news that many Spaniards are waking up to this morning. 39 dead, more than 100 injured, and more than 20 seriously injured. This accident happened late last night in an area about an hour north of Cordova on the south coast. Two trains have derailed at high speed. About 400 people were across both trains. Most of those dead and badly injured were at the front of the trains that derailed, particularly the one that was traveling from Madrid to Huelva. The other was traveling from Malaga to Madrid. And this derailment happened in an area called Adamuth. Lily, we're looking at the pictures, the latest pictures from the scene of the crash. Rescue efforts still ongoing there. A number of people I understand being treated for injuries. And the Spanish transport minister has been speaking. Is there any information about, you know, what could have caused the train to derail? Yes, well, like every sort of transport disaster, everyone is wanting answers immediately, and that's impossible. The transport minister has said this morning that this accident is particularly strange given the stretch of railway track is straight in the area that the trains derailed. But he said it will be at least a month until an investigation can determine what caused this. It's just questions at the moment. Yeah, and Spain has the largest high-speed rail network in Europe for trains moving over 250 kilometers per hour. What's the safety record of these trains? Yeah, these are, it's a very popular network. They're used every day by Spaniards in Spain, and it helps people connect and commute really quickly across the country. So they're very popular. This is the worst crash they've experienced in at least a decade. In 2013, the worst crash in history happened in Galicia in the northwest of the country when 80 people died in a derailment. So this isn't the first time Spaniards have experienced a tragedy of this size, but unfortunately that number of the death toll is continuing to rise this morning.
