From his backyard in Arizona, astrophotographer Andrew McCarthy has captured stunning photos of the celestial objects high above us.  His recent photo of the planetary parade has hundreds of thousands of likes on social media, so we talked to him to learn how he did it, why it isn’t a fake, and how he hopes to inspire others.

Astrophotographer Andrew McCarthy has produced a striking composite image of a recent planetary parade, where Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and Venus were visible together in the night sky. While Neptune and Uranus could not be seen, McCarthy used thousands of real photographs, taken with multiple telescopes and cameras, to assemble the detailed image using Photoshop.

McCarthy explained that it is not possible to capture all the planets in a single shot with visible details, so he photographed each element separately and combined them. His aim is to inspire more people to observe the night sky and appreciate astrophotography.

Well, check out this stunning image of the recent planetary parade, where Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and Venus were visible to the naked eye, but Neptune and Uranus were not. Now, before you yell, it's fake! This is actually a composite image with thousands of layers of real photos. Andrew McCarthy created it and other dazzling views of the cosmos. He's an astrophotographer. It's probably best to let him explain. My goal as an astrophotographer is always just to, I guess, just reveal what's hidden in our universe. I have a number of telescopes and cameras that I use. There's actually a telescope kind of propped up behind me right here. And I use these instruments to spend a lot of time, many hours sometimes, to reveal what's hidden in that darkness. There's no way to actually capture a photo of all of them at once while also being able to see details on those planets. So I capture these elements separately in the sky and then organize them in one single image just via Photoshop. When I compare them to the moon like I did, you're able to actually see like, oh, Jupiter is about like, you know, what, like a 20th the size of the moon. Mars is about like a hundredth the size of the moon. It takes hours of patience and a lot of specialty equipment. But Andrew's goal is pretty simple. To inspire more people to look up. We want to encourage more people about observing the sky by spreading the love of astrophotography.
