The package was intended to help Armaguard avoid insolvency and maintain its operations. Instead of accepting the external financial assistance, Armaguard has announced that it will pursue its own strategy to address its financial challenges.



Armaguard rejects lifeline to avoid insolvency

Armour Guard's rejection of a $26 million lifeline has puzzled some business experts, with one telling the ABC that he thinks the cash transport company might be bluffing or using this as a tactic to negotiate a counter-offer. Yesterday morning we heard that Armour Guard said that it was going broke or insolvent because it wasn't making enough money transporting cash around the country. These are the white armoured vehicles that people often see around transporting cash between big businesses and major banks and it is becoming less and less common seeing these transport vehicles around as people move towards using other payment methods to pay for their goods and services. Some of Australia's biggest businesses came together including Australia Post, Wares Farmers, major banks and supermarkets to offer a $26 million rescue package to Armour Guard to prevent from its possible collapse. And Armour Guard had until yesterday, the end of the day yesterday, to either accept or reject that offer. And yesterday afternoon Armour Guard confirmed that it would be rejecting that offer saying that it was still fully operational and that it would be working towards its own financial solution. But this situation has also raised questions about the future of cash in the Australian society and Armour Guard's long-term viability. This is what economics professor Richard Holden from the University of New South Wales Business School had to say. This is a business that's in decline, it's not going to be a business at some point in the relatively near future and so what's going on at the moment is really just managing a transition rather than keeping this as a long-term proposition. There have also been concerns about a possible cash shortage over the Easter long weekend and these concerns have eased a bit but they came about because there were reports that Coles had prepared its staff and stores to potentially move to a scenario where it would only be card-only processes over the Easter long weekend. Coles also halved its cash-out withdrawal limit from $400 to $200. But Coles has confirmed that it has resumed services with Armour Guard after a temporary pause and they've also reassured customers that everyone will still be able to pay with cash and withdraw cash from supermarkets over this Easter long weekend and into the future.
