Mille was elected in 2023 on a libertarian programme that his austerity policies have proved unpopular, and he's going through a period of political turbulence. His sister, Carina Mille, who's secretary general of the presidency, is implicated in a graft scandal. She's accused of taking bribes in exchange for medical contracts at Argentina's disability agency. In August, the siblings had rubbish and stones thrown at them during a campaign event. Former two-term president from the centre-left, Cristina Kirchner, has gloated at Mille's position on social media. Did you see that, Mille? Get out of your bubble, brother. Things are getting heavy. For the first time since taking office, Mille has seen Congress override one of his key decisions, blocking his veto of a bill to raise disability benefits. The former economist argued the measure would undermine efforts to balance Argentina's budget. Mille's political turmoil comes just a few weeks ahead of legislative elections on the 26th of October, which are set to be another litmus test for the leader.
