A significant arctic air mass is sweeping across the Midwest, South, and East Coast of the United States, prompting freeze alerts and warnings for more than 70 million people. Near whiteout and blizzard conditions are forecast in areas such as Wisconsin and Chicago, with some regions expected to experience the coldest temperatures in decades.

Heavy snowfall is predicted, with Michigan City and South Bend potentially receiving up to 18 inches, and Chicago facing up to 14 inches. The cold snap is expected to last through Monday and Tuesday, with milder temperatures anticipated by midweek.

Good evening everyone and thank you for joining us on this Sunday. Tonight the season's first big chill is in the air. Freeze alerts and warnings are in effect for more than 70 million people today. A near white out here in Wisconsin and near blizzard conditions are forecast in Chicago. CBS is meteorologist Andrew Kozak with more on what you need to know as you enter the work week. Yeah, good evening Jerica. Tonight we are watching arctic air pouring into the Midwest to the east and to the south. Some of the coldest air that many people have seen in decades tonight. Freeze watches and warnings from texas and Oklahoma through the south, deep south and even over toward the east coast. Places like Savannah Georgia Tuesday morning could tie records that we haven't seen since the 18 seventies. I mean take a look at Atlanta for tomorrow, 26 degrees below where we should be and that cold air moves into the northeast as we head into Tuesday along with the cold, the snow. Not only will we see some snow inland but lake effect snow band after band wind gusts 35 MPH for Chicago, even some thunder and lightning that's going to all add up. We have 12 to 18 inches possible areas like Michigan City, maybe over towards South Bend. Chicago itself could be looking anywhere between eight and up to 14 inches of snow and snow in the Appalachians as well. It's not going to last forever. We'll see some milder temperatures move in by the middle of the week, but this taste of winter is here through monday and Tuesday Jerica. Good to know Andrew Kozak. Thank you.
