Northeastern United States

A mass of Arctic air has descended from the Arctic Circle into the central and eastern United States, bringing widespread freezing temperatures to over 222 million people. The coldest conditions are expected in the upper Midwest, with wind chills dropping well below zero and some areas, such as Minneapolis and Duluth, experiencing temperatures as low as minus 27 to minus 30 degrees Fahrenheit.

The dangerous cold is also impacting cities like Chicago and New York, where wind chills are expected to remain in the teens and 20s. Authorities warn that prolonged exposure to these conditions can be hazardous, and residents are advised to limit time outdoors and wear appropriate layers.

Not surprised to see it coming way up here from the Arctic Circle, diving down, moderating as it does so, down toward the lower 48, but still, just gives you an idea, like an overall picture of where this cold air is coming from, where so many of us over the next few mornings are going to have those lows at or below freezing, 222 million by the time we get into Monday morning, and the numbers still around that figure as we head into Tuesday as well. This is Sunday morning, so tomorrow morning, you need all the layers in Kansas City, Des Moines, feeling like one to two below zero, Alpena feeling like 11, but look at Marquette, minus two, and check out Duluth by the time we get into Monday morning. Yeah, this is going to be brutal, minus 27 in Minneapolis, negative 30s for Duluth, so this is not just uncomfortably cold, this is just numbing cold, and it can be very dangerous if you're outside for a longer period of time, so don't do that. Chicago, we got these teens below zero for your wind chill factor throughout the day on Monday, even New York City, it's not as bad as some of you in the upper Midwest, but still, teens and 20s is what it will feel like between the buildings of Manhattan.
