Amnesty International has demanded that Guinean authorities conduct prompt, independent, and transparent investigations into the disappearance of activists Oumar Sylla and Mamadou Billo Bah. Both have been missing since July 2024, with no communication or updates from the state regarding their whereabouts or the progress of any investigations. 

The organisation, along with other human rights groups, has expressed concern over a broader pattern of disappearances and repression of dissent in Guinea. Amnesty International also criticised the lack of enforcement of the country's Transition Charter, which contains strong human rights protections, and denounced the shrinking civic space and restrictions on demonstrations.

It has been a year since activists Omar Sulla, known as Funniki Mengi, and Mamadou Belouba were last seen. Their forced disappearance is causing growing concern in Guinea. Local and international human rights organisations denounce the sluggish pace of justice, which is fuelling anxiety, fear and insecurity. It's very, very difficult, very hard for the families and loved ones of these individuals. We have had no communication from the Guinean state, let alone from the prosecutor, who during his only and single appearance announced investigations into these disappearances. Since then, we have had nothing, no updates to let us know whether the investigations are progressing, whether there have been any results. It's a total radio silence, which makes it even harder to endure. Omar Sulla and Mamadou Belouba were arrested on 9 July 2024. According to a third member of the organisation, the National Front for the Defence of the Constitution, which was dissolved in 2022, they were interrogated and tortured. In addition to Omar Sulla, known as Funniki Mengi and Belouba, who have been missing since July 9, 2024, we also recorded the case of the former Secretary General of the Ministry of Mines Sassou Nimaga. Then in December 2024, there was a journalist, Habib Marwana Kamara, who is still missing with no news or communications from the authorities. Amnesty International is calling on the authorities to shed full light on the cases of abduction and disappearance. The organisation has demanded prompt, independent and transparent investigations. When you look at the Transition Charter, it's a very well-written text with significant progress. Around 20 articles address the issue of human rights, stating clearly that nothing can justify violations of these rights. Unfortunately, this Transition Charter is neither respected nor implemented. What is the point of having a well-written text if they are not enforced? As Guinea prepares to adopt a new constitution, Amnesty International denounces the shrinking of civic space, a total ban on demonstrations and the repression of dissenting voices.
