The U.S. ambassador to Israel described the killing as a criminal and terroristic act. The incident occurs as the United States continues to push for a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. The Mousalit family has expressed doubt that the attackers will be prosecuted and has called for an independent U.S. investigation. The FBI has not commented on whether it will pursue an investigation.

Chief foreign affairs correspondent and Face the Nation moderator, Margaret Brennan, joins us now. Thank you for joining us. Margaret, what more can you tell us about how this death is being handled by U.S. officials, and if it could complicate relations with Israel? Well, Nate, it's remarkable to hear Ambassador Huckabee refer to it as a terrorist act, considering that the attackers were Israeli settlers. In the past, he's endorsed the view that God promised the West Bank to Jews and not Palestinians, and he even said there's no such thing as a Palestinian. But Saif Mousalit's cousin told CBS News that it was a mob of settlers who were seizing the family's land, and that is how this conflict erupted, with Mousalit sustaining three hours of beatings. The family claims Israeli troops blocked a Palestinian ambulance from providing him potentially life-saving care. This week, Secretary of State Rubio did make it a point to say Israel must figure out who was in that mob. And last evening, as you mentioned, the State Department said six people connected to the murder were arrested by Israeli authorities, but we have very little public information. Here's what makes this politically charged. Conservative movements in Israel and here in the U.S. have supported the goals of settler movements in the past. And back in January, President Trump removed U.S. sanctions on some settlers who had been deemed violent extremists by the U.S. government. Despite the high tensions in the West Bank, he has not condemned settler violence. The Mousalit family tells us they've got low expectations that the Israeli government will prosecute the attackers, and they've asked American lawmakers to press for an independent U.S. criminal investigation. We did ask the FBI if they're doing one, and they told us no comment. Margaret, what is the latest on the Gaza ceasefire talks? Well, in that other piece of Palestinian territory, there is actually hope. My sources tell me this is a critical moment. There has been a sticking point to date, and that has been Israel's willingness to withdraw troops from Gaza. And I'm told a new, more generous proposal by Israel was just made. It was given to Hamas by the mediators, Qatar and Egypt, and they are pressing Hamas to accept it. All of that would allow for a 60-day ceasefire, the release of remaining hostages and some Palestinian detainees, and permit in food and aid to starving Gazans. I'm told President Trump is very eager to have this eventually become an end to the war. Margaret, thank you.
