Flights were disrupted at Vancouver International Airport after an alleged ‘hijacking’ that ended with an arrest on the tarmac.

Flights at Vancouver International Airport were disrupted after police responded to an alleged hijacking involving a Cessna 172 aircraft. The plane, reportedly taken from the Vancouver Island area, entered restricted airspace and circled the airport before landing on the tarmac, where police arrested the sole occupant.

The incident led to the closure of airport arrivals for nearly 40 minutes, with nine inbound flights diverted to other airports. The aircraft, operated by the Victoria Flying Club, was towed from the runway, and authorities have stated that an investigation is ongoing. Airport operations have since returned to normal, though some delays may persist.

Social media video shows a small passenger plane landing on the tarmac at Vancouver International Airport taxiing down the runway met by several police cruisers lights flashing before officers are seen exiting their vehicles the alleged hijacker then taken into custody the incident grounded planes at YVR causing delays and diversions. The pilot came on and then he came on and said oh there's no airspace the airspace has been closed because of a ultralight plane that is not communicating with the tower. Police say the incident started just after one o'clock when they got reports that a Cessna 172 had been hijacked from the Vancouver Island area and was entering into airspace near YVR seen clearly from the ground by witnesses. He was doing us quite a radical turn at low altitude. I went wow it you know I wonder if he's in trouble. The flight path recorded on flight aware a flight tracking website shows the plane flying from Victoria directly to Vancouver before circling the airport. In an audio recording air traffic control can be heard warning others of the situation. Half an hour later police say the plane landed at the airport and officers arrested the lone occupant. The aircraft towed off the runway. YVR says the incident shut down arrivals at the airport for almost 40 minutes. Nine inbound planes were diverted to alternate airports. This is not something that we would experience on a regular basis but what I would say is that you know our emergency operations team our partners our CMP we exercise regularly to make sure that we can ensure a safe and secure environment for passengers. Now the airport says that flights are now operating normally but there could be some lingering delays which means to check your flight status if you are traveling tonight. And Jessica we're also learning more about the plane involved. Yeah Juanita so this is a small private passenger aircraft now the Victoria International Airport has confirmed that it is operated by the Victoria Flying Club. Now as for the investigation our CMP does say that it is ongoing but they won't be giving more details at this time.
