Unfortunately, Akron is facing its first homicide of the year after a 29-year-old man was shot and killed late Sunday night. I'm Remy Murray to tell you what we know so far. It's sad. I knew the guy, talked to him a couple of times, he was a good-hearted guy. That doesn't need to happen at all in this world, really doesn't. Not much can be heard on Elwell Court in Akron early Monday evening. It'll come on in a few seconds. But a little less than 24 hours ago. My daughter heard this and immediately dropped to the floor yelling, there's gunshots out there. Zachary Boer says he and his family heard multiple gunshots from inside their home. Then a bunch more start happening. As Boer and his neighbors waited for officers to arrive. We were all trying to figure out, you know, which house it was. He also re-watched this video from his ring camera. It's become a normal thing around here and it's, I got kids and stuff, so it's kind of scary for all of us. At this time, Akron Police Lieutenant Michael Murphy says they are looking for the person or people responsible for shooting and killing 29-year-old Lenard Owens just after 10 Sunday night in the 1,000 block of Elwell Court. We're in the early stages of the investigation. The officers began canvassing the area. We were able to collect several shell casings from the scene. So we're hopeful and optimistic that that evidence will help us trace back and locate a suspect. Murphy says it's too early to tell if the shooting was random or targeted. But he says the victim's dad was home during the shooting and reported hearing a car pull up. Man, he just pulled up and he just got to shooting on him, man. Although Murphy says the 29-year-old's father was not physically hurt, you can hear from these 911 calls that his heart is forever broken. As for neighbors, they're hopeful the violence will end. It's scary to hear and to have it so close to home and just to, we've been hearing it a lot lately. In the city of Akron, this is not something that we're going to tolerate and our number one priority is to reduce violent crime in our city. So we'll continue to do the work that we have to do in order to get down to the bottom of this investigation. Anyone with information is encouraged to reach out to Akron Police.
