A technology company in London has introduced smart glasses that use artificial intelligence to display real-time subtitles for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals. The glasses, developed by X-Ray Glass, project captions directly into the user's field of vision and support automatic language recognition and translation in 300 languages.

The product was inspired by the founder's experience with his grandfather's hearing challenges and aims to help users engage in conversations, especially in crowded settings. The glasses are priced at £699, or approximately US$935.

Jack Bloomfield is the head of marketing at X-Ray Glass. So for those who are deaf, hard-of-hearing, or perhaps struggle to engage with the conversations around them, they can simply put on a pair of smart glasses and immediately see the words being said around them. He says the company's founder, Dan Scarfe, was inspired by his grandfather's hearing challenges. So despite owning some of the world's best hearing aids, he was still struggling to engage with the conversations around him. It wasn't until that evening that he put captions on the TV, and everyone saw that he was instantly engaged. And that's very much where the light bulb moment came from. Peter Coughlin wears a hearing aid for his hearing impairment and agrees the technology could help him in a crowd. I was very pleasantly surprised, basically, because I can imagine that in the rugby club where there's a crowd around, I'm going to be able to concentrate on the person who's speaking and see clearly what he's saying, provided he doesn't speak ridiculously fast. The latest version of the glasses incorporates artificial intelligence and augmented reality, as well as automatic language recognition and real-time translation of 300 languages. The glasses retail for £699, or about US$935.
