Devin Hayes, a Denver resident and former Iowa State hockey player, was diagnosed with lymphoma at age 18 and received treatment at Rocky Mountain Children's Hospital. During his treatment, Hayes began handing out candy to young patients on holidays, which eventually led him to establish the non-profit organization Hospital Homies.

Hospital Homies aims to bring comfort and joy to children facing cancer by distributing candy, small toys, and books during holidays and other difficult times. Hayes has since completed his cancer treatment, is now cancer-free, and has returned to playing hockey. The organization continues to support young patients, and donations can be made through their website.

Hey, welcome on back. So, September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Nearly 8,500 Coloradans of all ages died of cancer last year, with in it until 21,000 diagnosed. Our Ethan Carlson sat down with someone who's really just trying to make those long hospital stays a little bit easier for kids in Colorado. Over 9,500 children are diagnosed with cancer every year in the United States. I'm at Rocky Mountain Children's, where one of those patients was inspired to give back. Critical supplies on the move. How about I make you a little bag? A bag of nerds, Laffy Taffy, and any candy that little Tao can imagine. The first thing that comes to mind is how strong these kids are. To watch them smile and have joy, even though they're going through what they're going through, is just absolutely incredible. But this isn't Devin Hayes' first time here. In 2022, he was a freshman in college on Iowa State's hockey team. He started having coughs and chest pain and wisely decided to see a doctor. She took a chest x-ray and she found a softball-sized tumor sitting above my heart and squeezing my trachea. Even though he was 18, he was transferred to Rocky Mountain Children's for their expertise in dealing with his specific type of lymphoma. And he quickly formed a connection with people like Dr. John Van Dornink. Despite being removed from everything that he had held dear scholastically and socially, he had such positivity and such an attitude of perseverance that it really showed who he was deep inside. The toughest parts of receiving treatment are watching your friends and family go through it and watching kids go through it. There's no rationalization for them. They're kids. They just know that the poke hurts. While still in treatment himself, Devin started dressing up and handing out candy to kids on Halloween. Woof, woof. Here, biscuit. Which soon became other holidays and then became a non-profit called Hospital Homies. Giving candy, small toys, and books to kids on holidays, days that are tough to be away from home. Here we have a young adult who is writing a story after his cancer treatment. And that story involves giving back to those who are facing the problem that he himself encountered. A place where just a little time spent together and sharing a few laughs can make all the difference. Just knowing that we're part of spreading that smile, spreading that joy, it means a lot.
