The country itself and the entire region has seen coups before. Many of them. But using force to reverse this latest coup would be controversial. Here in Ghana, among several countries now preparing to send troops into Niger there is some support for such a bold move. But very clearly many oppose it as well. Still many West African soldiers have been preparing to act against Niger's coup leaders for weeks. As if this wasn't already complicated there's a connection to Ukraine. Vladimir Putin supports the coup in Niger and mercenaries from Russia's Wagner group who've now largely left the fight in Ukraine are shifting more of their focus to Africa. The continent and more immediately Niger could become their new frontier. As African generals debate whether to invade Niger to restore democracy it all risks becoming a wider regional mess.
