An Afghan national has admitted to purposefully driving into a crowd in the German city of Munich and authorities have determined an Islamist motive for the crime, a prosecutor said on Friday (February 14).

An Afghan national has admitted to intentionally driving into a crowd in Munich, Germany, according to prosecutors. The man, identified as 24-year-old Fahad Nouri, is reported to have had an Islamist motive for the attack, although there is no evidence linking him to any specific Islamist organization. Security concerns have been heightened in the lead-up to the upcoming elections after the attack, which injured at least 36 individuals, including a child.

The German President, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, paid his respects by laying flowers at the site of the incident. Investigators continue to assess Nouri's communications and evidence gathered during searches to determine if anyone else knew about or was involved in the attack. The incident occurred shortly before international leaders, including US Vice President J.D. Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, arrived for the Munich Security Conference.

Nouri, who arrived in Germany as an unaccompanied minor in 2016, was living in the country legally with a work permit. He does not have any prior criminal convictions. Authorities remain vigilant as they examine the details surrounding this act.

Prosecutor Gabrielle Tillmann told a press conference there was no evidence to suggest the suspect, identified as Fahad Nouri, was affiliated with any Islamist organisation, but said that based on everything they knew, an Islamist motivation was likely. The suspected attack came hours before international leaders, including US Vice President J.D. Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, arrived for the Munich security conference. Investigators were evaluating Nouri's communications and items obtained during searches to ascertain whether anyone had prior knowledge of the crime or was involved. He arrived in Germany as an unaccompanied minor in 2016, was in Germany legally with a work permit, and was therefore not due to be deported. He does not have any prior convictions.
