Yesterday, the Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Border Czar Tom Homan slammed Mayor Adams and the city council after an off-duty patrol officer was shot by an undocumented migrant in an attempted robbery Saturday night. Noem and Homan criticized both the council and the mayor for failing to do more when it comes to immigration policies like Sanctuary City. Adams has tried to urge the city council to make changes to the Sanctuary City laws. So when asked about this criticism from federal officials, Adams deflected the blame. We have communicated with the city council. They made it clear they're not willing to change the law. We're doing our job, and now we need the other parts of the criminal justice system to do their job at the same time. Meanwhile, the New York Immigration Coalition released new video today of migrants being held in a makeshift detention area on the 10th floor of the federal building in Lower Manhattan. You can see in the video migrants sleeping on the floor. According to the group, this video comes from a migrant who was able to sneak their phone into the detention area after being detained by ICE following his appearance at immigration court in that same building. Immigration groups have been saying for weeks that migrants are being detained at the building without adequate food, medical care, or access to showers, and are being held for days and even weeks at a time. Congressional members have repeatedly tried to gain access to the 10th floor but have been turned away. DHS today in a statement denied that anyone is being mistreated, saying, quote, 26 Federal Plaza is not a detention center. It is a processing center where illegal aliens are briefly transferred. They're processed to be transferred to an ICE detention facility, but the Immigration Coalition says these people should never have been detained in the first place. These are individuals who are going to immigration court, people who are following the process that's been outlined to them by the U.S. government, and what they're being faced with is injustice and continuously being tricked, trapped, and then detained and then disappeared from their families. Now, Mayor Adams was also asked about this video today, and he deflected again, saying it's a federal building, not a city-owned property. Reporting live, I'm Morgan Mackay.
