The cause of the crash is under investigation, with early reports suggesting a snapped cable may have led to the loss of control. As a precaution, Lisbon's other funicular lines have been suspended until further notice.

Two Canadians missing after fatal Lisbon funicular crash

Portuguese investigators spent the day retrieving the mangled metal of what used to be a Lisbon landmark known as the Gloria Lift. The funicular railway usually only took a few minutes to climb or descend the steep windy cobblestone streets but this trip would have been terrifying with the speed of the runaway tram enough to rip up the road and rails before it was crushed after hitting a building on a steep curve. This is one of the greatest human tragedies in our recent history, said Prime Minister Luiz Montenegro. The victims came from all over the world with Portuguese officials saying there's a high possibility two Canadians are among the dead and one may also be injured. Global Affairs Canada says it's aware of two missing Canadians in Lisbon and it's gathering more information. One theory is that the cable running under the tracks that helped control the tram's speed snapped. British tourist James Nolan saw it all happen. It was coming down the hill. Something was wrong with the cable. It lost control, didn't have any braking ability. The cable was also connected to a twin rail car at the bottom. When one car went up the other went down but last night the rail car at the bottom stayed put. Abel Esteves saw the higher tram careening towards him. I shouted to my wife, we're all going to die here because it was moving at such a high speed, he said. The Gloria Lift has been operating for more than 140 years. Both the tram and the technology is very old but authorities say it's reliable and it's inspected frequently. The panoramic views at the top made this the most popular of Lisbon's three funicular rail lines. Many here say they're stunned this could have happened. Eliane Chaves said I've been living here for 20 years and I've always seen them maintaining it. The city's mayor says those other two funicular rail lines are being suspended until they find out what happened here. Adrienne. So Chris, as you said, this tram is iconic but it's also very old and we've got some early indications of where this investigation is headed. Well, unfortunately the employee who was on the tram, the brake man, he was one of the fatalities but investigators do have all that debris. They have lots of eyewitness reports and a private company was in charge of doing the maintenance.
