Pope Francis has chosen to be buried at the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome. The decision reflects his deep devotion to the Virgin Mary, an icon intrinsic to the church, known as Salus Populi Romani. This Byzantine icon holds great significance in the Roman Catholic tradition and is seen as a symbol of protection and health.

The Basilica of St. Mary Major is regarded as the oldest Marian sanctuary in the world, dating back to the 400s. Among the storied events associated with the basilica, it is said that a miracle occurred there when snow fell in Rome in August, leading to its construction. Seven other popes have been laid to rest at this site, a testament to its spiritual importance.

In addition to being close to the Pauline Chapel and its revered icon, Pope Francis's burial site will be near the altar of St. Francis of Assisi, reflecting the pontiff's admiration for one of the Catholic Church's most honored saints. The icon, known for its association with health and wellness, was notably prayed before by Pope Francis for an end to the COVID pandemic, highlighting its significance in times of health crises.
