The European Court of Human Rights has mandated that Italy must take action to address the pollution caused by the illegal waste dumping linked to the Camorra mafia in an area around Naples. This region, notoriously known as the "land of fires," has been the site of toxic waste dumping and burning for decades. The court has determined that this has violated the right to life of 2.9 million residents.

In its ruling, the court highlighted that the dumping has led to increased cancer rates and groundwater pollution affecting 90 municipalities. The court found that despite being aware of these issues since 1988, Italian authorities have not adequately responded. The ruling gives Italy a two-year timeframe to tackle the contamination and related health problems.

The case was initiated by dozens of impacted citizens and five local organisations, bringing the matter before the European Court of Human Rights. Residents have reported various health impacts stemming from the contaminated underground wells used for irrigation. The ruling underscores the urgency of governmental action to address pollution and safeguard public health.
