People lined up from the early hours of Sunday for a farewell to Pope Francis at his simple tomb in the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome.

Thousands of faithful gathered at the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome to pay their final respects to Pope Francis at his tomb. People began lining up at dawn, demonstrating the significant number of visitors, who were asked to limit their time at the tomb to only a few seconds to avoid congestion.

Simultaneously, at the Vatican, a mass attended by approximately 200,000 people took place. St Peter's Square reached its capacity shortly after, leading authorities to block further access. Many of the faithful congregated in surrounding areas to watch the proceedings on large screens.

The event coincided with the Jubilee for Adolescents, which drew hundreds of young attendees to the Vatican. However, the scheduled activities were adjusted to accommodate the funeral rites. Additionally, the canonization of Carlo Acutis, anticipated to become the first millennial saint, was postponed.
