IQ, or intelligence quotient, is measured through tests that evaluate problem-solving, pattern recognition, and information processing speed. Originally developed by Alfred Binet to identify children needing extra school support, modern IQ tests use tasks involving sequences, patterns, and abstract thinking, with most people scoring around 100.

However, IQ scores do not equate to overall intelligence or educational attainment. The tests do not measure creativity, social skills, or practical abilities, and are often criticized for their cultural bias and for reducing a person's abilities to a single number.
