At the eWorks facility in Freeport, New York, discarded electronics are being transformed into valuable commodities. Piles of outdated devices, such as old cellphones, televisions, and computers, arrive at eWorks in preparation for a unique form of treasure hunting. The electronics are meticulously dismantled to extract valuable materials like gold from component chips. According to eWorks CEO Mark Wilkins, while each gadget may only contain a small amount of gold, collectively they can yield a significant amount when processed in large quantities, approximately 70 to 85 pounds of gold from a million devices.

New methods of extracting these precious metals are being explored by researchers, reducing the environmental impacts historically linked to traditional techniques. Professor Ali Abbasparat from Cornell University has developed a method using an organic compound that acts like a sponge, selectively absorbing gold ions. This method promises to be more efficient and less harmful to the environment compared to using chemicals like cyanide. The recycled gold can be reused for a range of applications, such as in solar panels or even jewelry.

The potential benefits of this gold recovery process are twofold. Firstly, it provides a financial incentive for recycling, which could help in reducing the volume of electronic waste headed for landfills. Secondly, it offers employment opportunities, as seen at eWorks, which has employed individuals with disabilities, training them to sort and dismantle electronic waste. With the volume of global electronic waste anticipated to reach 80 million metric tons by 2030, initiatives like those at eWorks and the methods developed by Abbasparat are becoming increasingly significant.
