More than a thousand structures have been destroyed and lives lost as wildfires sweep across parts of Los Angeles.

The task of covering the Los Angeles wildfires presented unique challenges to journalists on the ground. As the flames spread across Los Angeles County, reporters like CBS News Los Angeles' Joy Benedict were at the forefront, providing continuous live coverage despite the difficult circumstances. Multiple fires broke out from Pacific Palisades to Pasadena, with historic Altadena being particularly hard-hit.

The rapid spread of the fires resulted in widespread evacuations, school closures, and palpable community fear. Journalists faced an arduous task as they reported from the scene, assisting firefighters, and checking on homes for viewers requesting updates on their properties. Tragically, some reporters had the somber task of informing viewers that their houses were burning.

The job of reporting extended beyond journalism as reporters and their crews helped rescue animals and provided emotional support to the community. As the fires raged, the communal spirit of Los Angeles was evident, with food and donation drives aiding those affected by the devastation. Despite the losses, the resilience of the community shines as they work together to rebuild.
