A CDC Vaccine Advisory Committee has voted to end the decades-old recommendation that every newborn receive the hepatitis B vaccine at birth. The new guidance recommends delaying vaccination for most infants, except those whose mothers test positive for hepatitis B or were not tested.

The decision, supported by 8 out of 11 committee members, has been criticized by major medical organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, who warn it could harm children. The acting CDC head will make the final decision on whether to adopt the committee's recommendation.
