A recent study published in the journal Nature indicates that about 90 percent of scientific studies and hazard assessments have underestimated baseline coastal water heights by an average of 30 centimeters. This underestimation means that projections for populations at risk from sea level rise are significantly lower than they should be.

According to the study, if sea levels rise by just over one meter, up to 37 percent more land could be inundated, threatening an additional 77 million to 132 million people globally. The risk is particularly acute in Southeast Asia and the Indo-Pacific region, while Europe and Atlantic coasts are less affected.
