More than a thousand structures have been destroyed and lives lost as wildfires sweep across parts of Los Angeles.

The Santa Ana winds in California continue to pose a significant fire risk, although their intensity has decreased. Meteorologist Ken Clark has indicated that these winds are expected to persist, maintaining a high fire danger for Southern California. Firefighting crews are still actively working to manage the ongoing wildfires near Los Angeles.

Despite recent rains contributing to fewer Santa Ana winds over the past couple of years, this year has seen a return of these conditions. The winds, which previously reached speeds of 70 to 80 miles per hour, have weakened. Current wind speeds are around 50 miles per hour in the mountains, with a further decrease expected.

Clark notes extremely low dew point temperatures, particularly in Avalon, where the dew point has reached 12 degrees, and in the St. Gabriel Mountains, where it is as low as negative 28 degrees. Even with no long-term drought predictions for California, the lack of recent rain is contributing to the dry conditions and high fire danger.

There is no immediate relief in sight, as a high-pressure system in the Great Basin is keeping the winds sustained. However, a pattern shift is expected over the weekend, with the possibility of showers and cooler temperatures, which may alleviate some fire danger.
