The report notes that in 2024, more than half of the 7,555 global terrorism deaths occurred in the Sahel, and in 2025, nearly half of the 5,500 deaths were also recorded there, despite a decline in the total number of victims.

The index, which ranks 163 countries based on the impact of terrorism, also indicates that Burkina Faso was the most affected country for two years, before being overtaken by Pakistan in 2025. The Sahel, a semi-arid region stretching from the Atlantic to the Red Sea, continues to face significant challenges from non-state actors using violence to establish or oppose authority.
