South Africa on Monday reburied the remains of 63 Khoisan people, among southern Africa's oldest indigenous communities, some of whose bodies were shipped to European museums over a century ago.

The remains of 63 Khoisan people, removed from their original burial sites decades ago, were reburied at a historic monument in South Africa's Northern Cape province. Some of the remains had been held in European and South African museums, including six repatriated from the Hunterian Museum in Scotland. 

President Cyril Ramaphosa attended the reburial ceremony, where traditional leaders offered prayers. The Khoisan, recognized as one of Africa's oldest indigenous communities, have long sought acknowledgment as South Africa's first indigenous people, and leaders described the reburial as a restoration of dignity.
