A joint report from the Century Foundation and Protect Borrowers found that 111 million Americans, representing half of all credit card holders and 40% of the population, were unable to pay off their monthly balances in 2025. The total outstanding credit card debt surpassed $1 trillion, highlighting a significant financial challenge for many households.

The report indicates that Americans were already struggling with credit card bills before recent increases in oil and gas prices, driven by international conflict and other economic factors. Proposals to cap credit card interest rates at 10 percent could save consumers millions daily, but such measures have not yet been implemented, facing opposition from banks and lack of official endorsement from the president.
