His death occurred following a stroke, and he was 88 years old. The decision to bury Pope Francis at Santa Maria Maggiore is notable as he is the first pope in over a century to be interred outside the ancient Vatican walls. This basilica held particular significance to him as a place he frequented for prayer before and after his travels. 

During his funeral, the city of Rome was filled with people from around the world who came to pay their respects. Many attendees spoke highly of Pope Francis, praising his humility, compassion, and his efforts to embrace a diverse range of people, including those from different religions and backgrounds. One attendee from Leeds expressed admiration for the Pope's advocacy for environmental and human issues, and his all-encompassing approach. 

Looking ahead, the conclave to elect the next pope is anticipated to commence soon, though the exact timing remains uncertain. The Cardinals, predominantly appointed by Pope Francis, will participate in this secretive process. There is hope among some that the next pope will continue Francis' progressive path, including his openness to the LGBT community. However, the unpredictability of the conclave leaves room for different outcomes regarding the future direction of the Vatican.
