The Pentagon is demanding that Anthropic, the maker of the AI chatbot Claude, agree to controversial changes that would allow the military unrestricted access to the technology for all lawful uses. Anthropic, however, is holding firm on maintaining restrictions to prevent the use of its AI for mass surveillance of Americans and autonomous weapons without human oversight. 

The Pentagon has offered written assurances regarding privacy and existing policies but has threatened to revoke contracts or seize the technology if Anthropic does not comply. Anthropic's CEO, Dario Amadei, has stated that the company cannot agree to the Pentagon's demands, emphasizing the importance of ethical guardrails. A decision is expected by the set deadline.
