After WestJet denied compensation, Neufeld filed a small claims case and discovered through flight data that his original plane was reassigned shortly before the cancellation. A WestJet lawyer admitted to the swap during settlement talks. Advocates say airlines often cite safety to avoid compensation and rarely face fines for rule violations.
