Taiwanese fans, who traditionally wave their national flag to support their athletes, encountered restrictions due to a long-standing ban on the flag since 1981. Some fans tried to circumvent this by creating alternative displays, but even these were sometimes confiscated by security personnel and other attendees. A notable incident involved a fan whose homemade map of Taiwan was forcibly taken from her by a security guard and another spectator. 

The incident has sparked significant reactions on Taiwanese social media, with images circulating that depict the fan's determination amidst the confrontation. The situation has unified Taiwan's usually divided political landscape, as both the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the main opposition party, Kuomintang, have condemned the treatment of Taiwanese supporters. They argue that Taiwan, as a democratic nation, should allow its citizens to express their national identity freely.

Historically, Taiwan has faced challenges in international sports. Up until the 1960s, the country competed as the Republic of China. Due to increasing pressure from Beijing, the country was compelled to adopt the name "Chinese Taipei" and use a different flag. Despite the official designation, many Taiwanese hope to see their athletes compete under their national flag on the international stage. The reality of international politics means compromises are often necessary to ensure participation in events like the Olympics.

As the Taiwanese team, competing under the name Chinese Taipei, secured their first gold medal at the Paris Games, the atmosphere at Taipei's main station was one of mixed emotions. While the victory was celebrated, the absence of their national anthem and flag during the medal ceremony left many with a sense of poignant triumph.
