Nuclear waste from the 1940s Manhattan Project continues to pose a hazard near St. Louis, Missouri. Originally stored with little oversight and secrecy, these wastes have impacted local residents, including Linda Maurice, whose family suffered fatal health consequences. Although the Environmental Protection Agency designated the area as hazardous in 1989, efforts to clean the area have been slow. 

Kristen Camuso, having faced her own health struggles, now acts as the policy director for the Missouri Coalition for the Environment. She advocates for removal of the radioactive material by the Army Corps of Engineers, which has managed the cleanup since 1997. Initially, the cleanup was estimated to take eight years, but now it is projected to be completed by 2038. Despite promises of safety, some still live near contaminated areas, causing concern over ongoing exposure. 

Camuso and the Washington University Environmental Law Clinic have raised concerns over the Corps' plans. Reports suggest that more thorium-230, a hazardous alpha emitter, remains than what is considered safe by the Department of Energy. The Environmental Protection Agency also sought more data on the contamination from the Corps but did not receive the requested information. Meanwhile, the Corps assures the public of the plan's safety and is expected to release new details in their upcoming five-year review.
