Pasijah began her initiative out of necessity when she noticed her previously dry neighborhood succumbing to rising waters. Over 20 years, she has diligently traveled by boat to tend to her mangroves, enhancing the coastline with hundreds of thousands of saplings. She believes these trees not only protect her home from advancing tides but also provide crucial habitats for birdlife.

Indonesia’s vulnerability to climate change is acute due to its extensive coastline; however, only 30 percent of land loss to seawater flooding is attributed directly to climate change. Environmental experts highlight that human activities, particularly groundwater drilling linked to development projects, are the primary cause of land subsidence. In the face of these challenges, the government announced plans for a large seawall, but this might come too late for residents like Pasijah.

Despite her home being isolated and over a mile from the coast, Pasijah and her family are determined to remain. Her commitment to the environment and preserving her home continues to drive her efforts. Pasijah’s resilience reflects a personal choice to adapt to rather than evacuate from environmental changes, exemplifying grassroots-level conservation action.
