Apple's current supply chain for iPhone production, predominantly based in China, allows the company to manufacture at scale and keep costs relatively lower. Dan Ives, Global Head of Technology Research at Wedbush Securities, highlights the challenges Apple would face if it tried to move its iPhone production to the United States. He mentions that such a transition would not only require significant investment—estimated at $30 billion—but also take approximately three years to shift just 10% of the supply chain to U.S. soil. 

Due to existing supply chain efficiencies and infrastructure already established in Asia, particularly China, the cost of manufacturing an iPhone within the U.S. could see prices soar to $3,500 per unit. While this price spike would pose considerable challenges for Apple, given current tariff conditions on Chinese goods imported into the United States, transitioning even a fraction of production stateside remains complex and costly.

Ives points out that Apple's manufacturing presence in Asia is vast, with hundreds of sites presently managing production. Taking these operations to the U.S. would require replicating substantial infrastructure, which many view as an insurmountable challenge. Apple's current stock price volatility is influenced, in part, by these trade tensions, and the prospect of re-shoring production raises concerns about potential impacts on the iconic brand's future.
