Several mudslides have been reported around Los Angeles as the city saw rainfall for the first time in more than eight months. The wet weather is bringing some relief to crews who are still working to contain three major fires.

More than a thousand structures have been destroyed and lives lost as wildfires sweep across parts of Los Angeles.

Several mudslides have been reported in areas around Los Angeles following the first rainfall in over eight months. The heavy rainfall has led to road closures, including the Pacific Coast Highway and Malibu's public schools. Firefighting crews, who are still working to contain three major fires in Los Angeles County as well as a fire in San Diego County, have found some relief with the rainfall. However, the National Weather Service has issued warnings about an elevated risk of rock and mudslides due to the severely burned landscape.

The storms have also brought snow and ice to parts of Southern California, causing sections of Interstate 5, north of Los Angeles, to be shut down. The Palisades fire near Malibu, the Eden fire near Pasadena, and the Hughes fire near Castaic Lake are largely contained, though the rain has exacerbated mudslide risks. Burned areas are particularly prone to mudslides because the soil no longer retains water due to absent vegetation.

Authorities are urging residents to stay cautious, as mudslides can further damage properties already affected by the fires. Additional concerns include toxic ash being spread by the rain, which complicates cleanup efforts. Officials are calling for more resources to address the ongoing challenges posed by the mudslides and residual fire damage.
