The device, consisting of five litres of liquid believed to be fuel and an ignition system, was discovered and neutralized before it could be detonated.

The investigation has been taken over by France's counter-terrorism prosecutor's office, with involvement from Paris judicial police and the domestic intelligence service. The incident occurred a few streets away from the Champs-Élysées, and authorities are continuing their probe into the matter.
