The team uses biopolymer gels and 3D-printed moulds to mimic the intestine's inner lining, allowing pharmaceutical companies to study drug interactions, immune responses, and microbiome communication. If successful, this approach could provide more reliable and ethical testing methods for new medicines, with ongoing efforts to further refine the model's complexity.
