The Ben family from Altadena, a historically Black community, has experienced substantial loss due to the Eaton fire, which devastated the area, destroying homes and cherished memories. Oscar and Lauren Ben, among the affected family members, reflect on the erasure of generations of family history. Despite the destruction of at least 20 homes and the loss of generational wealth, the family remains grateful for their survival. Oscar's granddaughter, Treasure, described the fire's impact as like a volcano engulfing the city.

The family's history in Altadena, free from the discriminatory practices that often prevented Black families from buying property elsewhere in the United States, dates back multiple generations. Oscar's mother, Marie, raised her family in the community, where they felt a sense of safety and inclusion. Tragically, the fire destroyed all three family homes and their musical instruments, which were integral to their cultural and personal growth. 

As the Ben family grapples with their new reality, they have sought temporary accommodations in an Airbnb while awaiting insurance settlements. Lauren and her sister Angela are urgently searching for a long-term rental. Despite the challenges, the family is determined to remain on their ancestral land and rebuild, honoring the legacy managed by their grandmother. They have no intention of selling their land, reflecting a strong sense of belonging and commitment to their community. The family's prayer during this difficult time is one of endurance and hope for restoration, with a wish that neither their family nor Altadena is forgotten.
