Researchers at King's College London have worked with 23 hospitals around the globe to create a dataset on which to train this AI, named MELD. By analyzing MRI scans, MELD can identify potential brain lesions that are often too minute for human specialists to spot easily.

The AI tool evaluates brain scans and can indicate the precise location of abnormalities, offering a confidence level in its diagnosis. This capability is significant as identifying brain abnormalities may lead to surgical options that could alleviate or cure epileptic seizures. Although the AI tool is not yet clinically available, its developers have made its software open source to train clinicians and researchers worldwide.

Epilepsy affects roughly one out of every 100 people globally, with one in five cases linked to a structural brain abnormality. The size of these abnormalities can be minuscule compared to an MRI scan's millions of pixels, highlighting the importance of accuracy and precision which the AI tool can provide.
