Fifteen soldiers were killed and five others wounded in a jihadist attack on an army base in northern Benin, according to a statement from Benin's military. The Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an al-Qaeda affiliate, claimed responsibility for the raid in Kofunu near the Niger border.

The attacked base was reportedly pillaged and burnt down. Benin's military has launched search operations in the area, as JNIM has increased recruitment and attacks in the region despite the country's counter-terrorism efforts, including a 3,000-troop anti-jihadist force established in 2022.
