France's Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu won crucial backing from the Socialist Party. This was thanks to his pledge to suspend a contested pension reform which would raise the age of retirement from 62 to 64. But it won't scrap the measure altogether. It's a step in the right direction, but there's a great deal of mistrust. It's just postponing the problem until later. With a divided parliament, it will be an uphill battle over cost-cutting measures to rein in France's deficit and debt. With opposition parties calling for fresh elections and President Emmanuel Macron to resign, French people will be watching the government's moves very closely.
