Faced with the radicalization of the discourse against women's rights, an analysis by a think tank suggests that its origin is not only cultural but also economic.

The European Policy Centre has released an analysis suggesting that the rise in anti-feminist discourse in the European Union may partly be driven by economic factors. The think tank posits that the economic difficulties faced by young European men, such as declining income, wealth, purchasing power, and access to education and housing, are contributing to this trend. Particularly, less qualified young men are hit hardest by job losses resulting from technological advancements.

Despite men generally earning more than women in the EU, young women below 25 in countries like Finland, Malta, Greece, France, and Belgium now outpace young men financially. According to Javier Carbonell, these economic challenges have enabled the far right to attract young male voters, intensifying a gender-based political divide. Among older demographics, voting patterns between men and women show less stark differences.

The analysis highlights the need to combat anti-feminist rhetoric and suggests that political leaders should address these economic issues. By focusing on employment, housing, and income, a more comprehensive solution for the youth in Europe might be crafted, potentially alleviating the current socioeconomic factors fueling the radicalization against women's rights.



Young men's financial insecurity helping to fuel anti-feminism in EU

What if the blows to women's rights in Europe also had an economic origin? According to an analysis by the European Policy Centre, the difficulties encountered in particular by young European men could explain, in part, the radicalisation of anti-feminist discourse. There's an economic element here. And what we know is that young men have declined in terms of income, wealth, purchasing power, access to housing and especially education and they have been falling behind young women in this regard. The least qualified young men are the most affected by job losses caused by technological developments. While men still earn more than women in the EU, for the first time this trend has been reversed among young people under 25 in Finland, Malta, Greece, France and Belgium. According to Javier Carbonell, in this context, the far right has been able to attract some of these young male voters, creating a new, more gender-based divide. This happens mostly among young population. Among older population, women that are 35 or 55 vote more or less equally to the far right than men. So the real scary thing is that this increasing division between young people, women going more to the left and men going to the right. To protect women's rights, the analyst suggests combating anti-feminist rhetoric. But he also calls on political leaders to find economic solutions in terms of employment, housing and income, to bring more perspective to the whole of Europe's youth.
