The Guizhou province is already home to almost half the world’s 100 tallest bridges, but it is about to be home to the tallest bridge in the world - demonstrating technological prowess, and large scale ambition.

China has officially opened the Huajiang Canyon Bridge in Guizhou province, now recognized as the world's tallest bridge. The structure, suspended 625 metres above a river, was completed after three years of construction and required 22,000 tonnes of cement and steel. 

The bridge has quickly become a local landmark, attracting tourists and online influencers. Recent structural integrity tests involved driving 96 trucks onto the bridge. The project is part of a broader effort to showcase China's infrastructure capabilities, with other major bridges and motorways also under development across the country.

World's tallest bridge opens in China

This gigantic structure hangs in mid-air between two mountains, 625 metres above the river below. China has now officially opened the highest bridge in the world. Before it took an hour, now it only takes two minutes. In the skies of Guizhou province, the Huajiang Canyon Bridge took three years to build and 22,000 tonnes of cement and steel. Last month, a testing team drove 96 red trucks onto designated points to test the bridge's structural integrity. The motorway which connects to the bridge is as impressive, splitting mountains in half on its winding path. The Huajiang Canyon Bridge has become a local treasure, a tourist attraction and somewhat of an influencer magnet. Floating roads like these are dotted around the province. These technological innovations are emissaries of Chinese prestige. On the Yangtze River, this brand new cable-stayed bridge is 10 kilometres long, making it the longest bridge in the country. In the region of Changjiang, another huge project is about to come to light. In only a few months, a motorway will cross this entire estuary. Beijing is demonstrating its infrastructure prowess, which shows no limits.
