A woman in her late 40s was found deceased in a car parked outside the Lake Illawarra police station in New South Wales, Australia. The woman had visited the station, spoken with officers, and returned to her car, where her body remained undiscovered for approximately 72 hours despite the busy nature of the station.

Authorities have launched several investigations, including a critical incident review and examination of security footage, to determine the cause of death and why the body went undetected. Police have reassured the public that the station remains safe and that findings will be handed to the coroner.

Investigators are now working to try and find out how a woman was able to lay dead for days on end in a car park outside a police station. Authorities say the woman, in her late 40s, drove to the station and parked in a spot available to the public on Tuesday. It's understood she spent a few hours speaking with officers in reception before heading back to her car around 6.30pm. Three days later, an officer made a gruesome discovery after noticing a large object underneath blankets and clothes on the backseat of a blue Toyota Yaris. He broke into the car and that's when the body was discovered. As you can appreciate, the weather has been hot. The vehicle was locked. It would have been exceptional temperatures within the vehicle. Unfortunately, her body is in an advanced state of decomposition. Paramedics were called but unfortunately couldn't revive her. It's thought the woman may have been living in the car which hadn't been reported stolen. Several investigations were immediately launched including a critical incident review which will look at how the body in the car managed to go undetected by officers for roughly 72 hours. Authorities say this is one of the busiest stations in the region with cars and officers coming and going at all hours of the day and that this is a learning opportunity for police. We have white level inspections that we encourage all our police to do every shift and that is to walk around the police station, to walk in the police station, to look for objects like bags and that that may be out of place. The exact cause of her death is still being investigated including whether the hot weather in recent days could have been a factor. Why she was even at the police station in the first place will form as part of the investigation. Police reassuring locals it's still safe to visit the station. Day and night that parking area is congested with vehicles that people that are reporting on bail, members of the public making reports, police parking their vehicles. In regards to the passage of time for this particular case there's nothing at present that's raising any concerns which members of the community should be concerned about. Police are also reviewing two security cameras which are pointed directly at the car park. Their findings will be handed over to the coroner to determine exactly how the woman died.
